Mustafar
System: MustafarThis volcanic world was the smaller of three worlds that orbited a remote star in the Outer Rim Territories. The surface of the planet was continually being shaped and reformed by eruptions of lava and gas, as well as the gravitic strain imposed by its neighbors, Jestefad and Lefrani. In fact, Mustafar's orbit was so close to that of Jestefad that several astrophysicists believed it could be considered one of the gas giant's moons. However, Lefrani exerted just enough gravitational force to keep Mustafar a separate world unto itself. Because of all these forces, Mustafar appeared to glow a deep orange-red from space, as molten rock was constantly moving across and just below its surface. Amazingly, a race of tall, thin humanoids known as Mustafarians managed to eke out a civilized existence on the planet, as did a species of immense insect known as Mustafar lava fleas. It was belived that, during the early centuries of the Old Republic, that Mustafar was a lush, green world that served as a training facility for the ancient Jedi Knights. The Jedi believed that the planet's core was a kind of vergence, emanating a large amount of energy in and through the Force. The Jedi abandoned their temples on Mustafar after the ancient Sith launched a massive attack on the planet. The Techno Union established a mining outpost on Mustafar some 300 years before the onset of the Clone Wars, laying claim to ownership and extracting precious metals and ores from the free-flowing lava that covered much of the planet's surface. The lava on Mustafar was relatively liquid at temperatures of just 800 degrees, due to the large concentration of unusual isotopes in the rock that formed it. This allowed it to flow freely, and allowed the Mustafarians who worked for the Techno Union to collect it in relative safety. It was on Mustafar that General Grievous hid the Council of Separatists, after the Jedi discovered the presence of Grievous on Utapau. This was all part of the schemes of Darth Sidious, who knew that he needed to eliminate the Separatists before he could assume control of the galaxy. By gathering the Council of Separatists on Mustafar, Sidious had them trapped in one location. Then, he dispatched his new apprentice, Darth Vader, to eliminate the Separatist leaders. This event served as the final act of both the Clone Wars and the Old Republic, solidifying Chancellor Palpatine's position as Emperor of the galaxy. The loss of the mining facility on Mustafar, and the deaths of the Separatist leaders who were on the planet, were later reported as an "industrial accident" by the HoloNet News agency.
