Skywalker, Ben

Category: Characters
Type: Human

This was the name given to the son of Luke Skywalker and his wife, Mara Jade Skywalker, born shortly after the Battle of Duro. Named to honor the memory of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ben was born aboard the converted Star Destroyer Errant Venture, during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy. He was separated from his parents shortly afterward, both to protect him and allow them to fight against the alien invaders. Ben was taken in by his aunt and uncle, Leia Organa Solo and her husband, Han, and brought up on Coruscant. When the Yuuzhan Vong launched their attack on Coruscant, Ben was in Leia's custody as the Solo family made its way to the Millennium Falcon. However, the intervention of Viqi Shesh forced Leia to turn Ben over to C-3PO, who was whisked aboard the Byrt instead of remaining with the Solos. Ben was then kept in several secure locations for the rest of the war against the Yuuzhan Vong, including the Shelter base within the Maw, and Mara feared that this period of separation from his parents led to severe anxiety in young Ben. She found it increasingly difficult to locate him through the Force, and both Mara and Luke realized that Ben had started equating the use of the Force to the warfare and bloodshed of the conflict.

Thus, despite having an exceptionally strong connection to the Force, Ben unconsciously shut it off. He didn't want to touch the Force, for fear that it might bring more bad things into his life. With the defeat of the Yuuzhan Vong, Luke and Mara resolved to spend more time with Ben, but the rigors of leading the new Jedi order continued to keep them apart. Luke and Mara acquired a Defender Droid to keep watch over Ben, but he found Nanna's presence infuriating. In several conversations, Ben admitted that he wanted to be more like his uncle, Han Solo: working on his own and doing things the hard way.

During the initial stages of the conflict with the Colony, Ben unknowingly befriended the first assassin bugs of the Gorog hive, unaware that he was putting his mother in danger. His relationship with the assassin bugs gave him a connection to the Gorog hive, although he was not considered as fully immersed as a true Joiner. It was during this time that Luke and Mara discovered that Ben opened up more whenever he was around his cousin, Jacen Solo, and asked Jacen to take Ben under his wing. Jacen agreed, but was careful not to call Ben an apprentice, since the youth continued to ignore the callings of the Force. However, over time, Ben began to tentatively touch the Force, and his connection was strengthened with Jacen's help. As a Padawan, Ben adopted the ancient tradition of growing a single braid of hair to indicate his status, despite the fact that this was not required by the modern Jedi Order. He displayed an uncanny ability to remember things that he had seen or heard with incredible accuracy.

It was not long before the raw power that was within Ben often bubbled to the surface, as when Jacen traveled to Hapes to see Tenel Ka. They found themselves in the midst of a Gorog assassination attempt on the lifes of Tenel Ka's infant daughter - of which Jacen was the father. His connection to the Gorog became evident when he was able to accurately locate the killer bugs in the ceiling and hidden escape tunnels, which helped them escape from the Gorog and confront Ta'a Chume. Ben's connection to the Gorog was not as deep as that of Jacen's sister, Jaina, which prevented him from becoming a true Joiner. In the wake of the struggle against UnuThul and the Colony, Ben continued to train as a Jedi under Jacen's tutelage. When he was thirteen, he accompanied Jacen on an investigation of the Dammant Killers weapons plant on Adumar, where they discovered illegal weaponry being produced for entities outside the Galactic Alliance. They were then dispatched to Centerpoint Station, on a mission to disable the station before Thrackan Sal-Solo could re-initiatize it and use it as a weapon. However, they were forced to split up when Jacen was captured by Sal-Solo, and Ben set out to complete the mission on his own. Ben discovered the unusual droid that had been programmed to "become" Anakin Solo, and convinced it to shut itself down before it was used as a weapon.

Ben later accompanied Jacen to Lorrd, during the investigation into the death of Siron Tawaler. It was Ben who was able to locate a shuttle that had fled Toryaz Station in the wake of Tawaler's murder, while Jacen was busy with Nelani Dinn. Upon returning to Coruscant, Ben became aware that he was no longer a kid, especially when he came to the realization that much of the growing conflict between Corellians and the Galactic Alliance was rooted in the disabling of Centerpoint Station. As terrorists both supporting and opposing Corellian independence caused violence on Coruscant, Ben understood that he needed to act, if only to ease his mind that it wasn't all his fault. Thus, when Jacen Solo was named the head of the Galactic Alliance Guard, Ben was more than happy to take on a role within the GAG himself. His perspective was skewed, however, when he befriended Barit Saiy, a youth who was Corellian by birth, but was a native of Coruscant. Ben was shocked when he saw Barit draw a blaster in an attempt to kill an officer of the Coruscant Security Force, and used the Force to deflect the shot.

This event forced Ben to choose between a potential friendship and his duty to the Galactic Alliance. In the end, Ben provided the location of the Saiy family's workshop to Jacen, which allowed the police to arrest Barit and his family as dissident. Barit swiftly denounced Ben and his assocation with the Galactic Alliance, leaving Ben with a hollow sense of purpose that only worsened when Jacen Solo tried to use the Force to interrogate Ailyn Habuur, only to have her die before revealing any information. While Ben understood the need to learn everything they could from Habuur, he failed to see how Jacen's use of the Force could be considered a reasonable way to obtain it.

The continued growth of Ben's powers and his responsibilities within the GAG worried his parents, who feared that Ben was falling onto the same path to the Dark Side that Jacen was. In an effort to assess his son, Luke ordered him to return to the Jedi Temple and meet him in combat in the Sparring Arena. Both of Ben's parents were aware that separating Ben from Jacen would be troublesome, but needed to know where their son stood.

When Jacen realized that there was a plot to assassinate Tenel Ka, Ben accompanied him to the Hapes Cluster aboard the Anakin Solo. While Jacen attended to the needs of Tenel Ka and her daughter, Allana, Ben was dispatched with the crew of the recon skiff Rover to Terephon, where they recovered Jaina Solo and Zekk. The two Jedi told of being attackjed by the Ducha Galney, who was willing to destroy her own family estate in an attempt to kill the Jedi. The group then raced back to Hapes with the knowledge of Ducha Galney's treachery, only to find themselves in the middle of the space battle between the Hapan Royal Navy and the Heritage Fleet. They managed to get a warning off to the Fountain Palace of the plot, but it required that the Rover fly into the battle. Ben was dismayed when the ship's crew agreed to remain onboard, even if it meant they would be shot down and killed.

The group of evacuees was rescued by Han and Leia Solo aboard the Millennium Falcon, and Ben was forced to place the Solos under arrest, as he believed them to be Corellian insurgents. He drew his lightsaber on Jaina Solo when she tried to help repair the ship, accusing her of conspiring with them. Zekk tried to stop Ben from being foolish, and the younger man lashed out with his lightsaber, burning a slash down Zekk's side. The confusion left Ben even more bewildered, unsure of how he was to gauge the loyalty of those closest to him.

In the wake of the Hapan action, Ben was given a secret assignment by Jacen: to recover the Amulet of Kalara. He found himself alone on the mission, stranded in the Drewwa Spaceport, without any credits. In order to survive, Ben discovered how easy it was to steal another being's credcards, a fact that only bothered him until he rationalized it in his own mind. His mind only became more confused when he tracked Faskus to Ziost, and he had to take in Faskus' daughter Kiara in order to complete the mission. The energy of the Force that was found on Ziost kept urging him to eat the young girl in order to maintain his strength, an action that repulsed him as much as it made sense to him. Ben fought through these feelings of confusion and dread, and eventually rescued himself and Kiara by locating a strange starship.

The ship could only be controlled through the Force, and was recognized as a Sith artifact when he returned it to Jacen. Although he knew that he had done what was required to complete the mission, Ben questioned the need for the mission, especially since it had cost Faskus his life and orphaned Kiara. His feelings about the mission concerned Lumiya, who questioned Ben's suitability as Jacen's apprentice. Ben himself knew that he was maturing, and went so far as to explain to his father that he was too far advanced to simply return to the life of a "normal" Padawan. He found that he was more right than he knew when Jacen suggested that Ben lead the mission to assassinate the Corellian Prime Minister, Dur Gejjen.

He traveled to Vulpter with Jori LeKauf and Lon Shevu, and was in position when Gejjen left his meeting with Cal Omas. Following his orders, Ben shot Gejjen in the head, killing the man instantly. Security agents flooded in, forcing LeKauf to sacrifice his own life to ensure that Ben and Shevu could escape. LeKauf's death shook Ben greatly, since the two had become good friends. He felt that he couldn't return to either Jacen's residence or that of his parents, and Shevu graciously offered to let Ben stay at his apartment for a couple of days. Ben tried to reconcile his conscience, but found that the only way to get past himself was to explain his actions to his mother. He met Mara in a tapcaf on Coruscant, and explained the whole thing. Although he was surprised that his mother didn't visibly react, Ben knew that she was angrier than she had ever been with Jacen Solo. Ben's own feelings toward Jacen changed forever when he overheard Jacen talking to Lumiya, and he realized that Jacen had been lying to him all along.

Thus, when Jacen set out on a secret trip to Hapes, Ben decided to follow him and see what was happening. He found Jacen locked in a starfighter duel with his own mother, and with Lumiya helping to force Mara's StealthX fighter to ground on Kavan. Ben managed to make contact the Sith Meditation Sphere that Lumiya was flying, and forced it to ignore her commands. He then tried to locate his mother, and was utterly shocked when he felt her death in a wave of Force energy. His sudden emotion allowed Lumiya to escape, but Ben had little concern for her.

He tracked his mother's presence to Kavan, where he discovered her body in a storm tunnel. Ben was both surprised and concerned when Jacen suddenly appeared, offering comfort and a pledge to track down Mara's killer. They brought Mara's body back to Ben's father, who believed that it had been Lumiya who killed her. Luke, who had killed Lumiya in order to avenge Mara, realized that it couldn't have been Lumiya who killed Mara after Ben explained that he had been holding Lumiya hostage when he felt Mara's death.

It was shortly after this that Ben came to believe that his own cousin, Jacen Solo, had been responsible for his mother's death. He chose to confront Jacen with this information, before allowing himself to "accept" Jacen's alibis in order to stay close to Jacen and gather more evidence against him. Unfortunately, Jacen's story implicated the former Chief of State, Cal Omas, in Mara's death. Ben decided to confront Omas, in order to gain back Jacen's trust. He did not want to kill Omas, however, since he was convinced of Jacen's guilt. Omas, however, knew that Jacen would need to see evidence of his demise, and sacrificed himself so that it would look like Ben killed him.

Ben then returned to Jacen's side, aboard the Anakin Solo, and bided his time. He tried to attack Jacen during the assault on Kashyyyk, but only succeeded in killing Commander Twizzl. However, this attack gave Jacen - who had become secretly Darth Caedus - reason to believe that Ben might still become a Sith. Ben, for his own part, played the role of a student perfectly, although he controlled his hatred of Jacen and used it to focus on exposing the truth about his cousin. He was unprepared when Jacen placed him in the Embrace of Pain aboard the Anakin Solo, but Ben fought through it until he found an unexpected ally. His own father, Luke, had infiltrated the Star Destroyer to confront Jacen, and drove Jacen to the ground before freeing Ben. Ben demanded to be the one to kill Jacen, but Luke refused to allow him to succumb to the desire to avenge his mother. This brief discussion gave Jacen a chance to recover, but Ben plunged his mother's vibroblade into Jacen's back before he could attack Luke. They left Jacen to die, and set out to escape from the ship.

In the weeks that followed, Ben worked to repair his relationship with his father. However, it seemed that he was the only being in the galaxy who had figured out that his mother had been killed by Jacen Solo. His father had believed it was Lumiya, then Alema Rar, who had been behind Mara's murder. Thus, when Alema Rar was finally killed by Jagged Fel, Luke finally came to believe that Mara's death had been avenged. Ben, however, still maintained that Jacen was the true murderer, and struggled to find enough evidence to convince his father of this truth. While discussing the galactic situation with his father, Ben tried to bring Luke back to the realization that the Jedi needed him to be a leader. When Luke refused to buy into this thought, Ben had a horrible thought: maybe his father wanted to be dead, so that he could finally be with his wife. When Ben confronted Luke with this idea, Luke suddenly realized that Ben was closer to the truth than he knew. As Luke emerged from his grief, he gave Ben permission to begin building his own lightsaber.

Ben later accompanied Luke on a mission to destroy Centerpoint Station, because of his knowledge of the station's interiors. However, even though the mission was nominally a success, Ben found that he still felt as if he were the only person who knew who had killed his mother. Since his father still believed that it had been Alema Rar, Ben turned to his aunt, Leia Organa Solo, for someone to talk to. This wasn't much easier, telling his aunt that he was convinced that her son had killed his mother, but Leia listened to his reasoning. She didn't come out and agree with him, but made Ben think about keeping an open mind as he started his own investigation.

Ben took a leap of faith and contacted Lon Shevu, hoping that the GAG officer would help him discover the identity of Mara's killer. Shevu, who had had enough of Jacen Solo's actions, readily agreed, and even used a three-day vacation to travel to Kavan with Ben to perform another sweep of the crime scene. On Kavan, Ben was visited by a ghostly image of his mother, in which she pulled several hairs out of her head and motioned that he take them. The hairs didn't really exist, at least on Kavan, but Ben realized that he might find some if he investigated Jacen's StealthX fighter. Shevu once again used his connections to help Ben, providing him a forensics droid and access to the fighter when Jacen traveled to Fondor. They found several of Mara's hairs in the cockpit, some of them covered in blood, and at least one with the follicle still attached. The forensics droid later confirmed that the hair was Mara's giving Ben the evidence he needed to confront his family.

Shevu only added to the evidence in the wake of the Second Battle of Fondor, when he secretly recorded a meeting with Jacen Solo, in which he explained why he had to kill Mara Jade Skywalker. Jacen firmly believed that he had killed her as part of a grander plan to save the galaxy, which gave his "confession" an air of legitimacy. However, for Ben and his father, it gave them the information necessary to formalize plans to bring Jacen to justice. In the wake of this revelation, Ben was elevated to the rank of Jedi Knight. He was somewhat surprised to learn that he had been chosen to accompany Jaina Solo on a Jedi-sanctioned mission to destroy Darth Caedus. The mission was nearly cut short when Ben was intercepted by Tahiri Veila on Coruscant, during a meeting with Lon Shevu. He was brought down by the stunning fire of the GAG guards who accompanied her, and was taken away for interrogation.

Using a Force blocking technique he had learned from Jacen, Ben refused to answer the questions of the droid SD-XX, which relentlessly pressed him for the location of the new Jedi base. When the droid had to give up, Tahiri took over the interrogation, trying to use her feminity to coerce Ben into answering. Ben refused to be drawn into her plans, forcing Tahiri to take a different tack. She took him out of his cell and brought him to the primary torture area, where he was forced to look upon the damaged body of Lon Shevu. Tahiri gave Ben the chance to save Shevu's life, in exchange for information on the Jedi base. Shevu refused to let Ben give up the information, and suffered a heart attack while Tahiri tortured him.

With Shevu's life no longer a bargaining chip, Ben realized that he had the upper hand. He goaded Tahiri into slapping him hard across the face, which knocked over his hoverchair and gave him a moment of confusion in which to act. Drawing upon the Force, Ben shoved Tahiri into her two guards, allowing himself to get free of the hoverchair. He then used the Force to nudge one guard's weapon off-target, striking Tahiri with a stunning blast. Once he was free, Ben gained the confidence of the two guards, who gave him enough information to attempt an escape. Before he left, Ben dumped Tahiri's body into a processing chute, then arranged to take Shevu's body and send it on to his widow on Valkin.

After being returned to Shedu Maad by Trista and Taryn, Ben was placed in command of the evacuation of the Jedi younglings from the Jedi base, after it was learned that Darth Caedus had followed Jaina Solo to the hidden base. Ben took the younglings to Uroro Station, as part of a plan to draw Caedus' forces into The Throat. When Caedus made to attack the station, Ben would then transport the younglings away from the station, with the intent of drawing Caedus deeper into a Jedi trap. When the word was given, Ben and Trista and Taryn made sure that the younglings were safe, then took their transports back to Shedu Maad. There, they were beset by ships from the Imperial Remnant, which had been ordered to attack the world, but lacked any detailed knowledge about where the Jedi base might be.

Ben and the twins learned that General Livette of the Hapan military had supplied the Imperials with information on the Jedi base, and had allowed them to land on the planet, despite orders from Tenel Ka herself. Livette had been loyal to Ducha Requud, but her loyalty gave way after the Ducha was killed. Ben and Taryn then set out to confront the approaching Imperial force, which was led by Tahiri Veila. Ben then confronted Tahiri during a firefight, and their lightsaber battle took them beneath the planet's surface. Ben appealed to Tahiri to break off her attack, hoping to return her to the Light Side of the Force. When Tahiri relented, Ben offered to help her regain her standing in the Jedi Order. Tahiri questioned this offer, but realized that Ben had been right about Darth Caedus all along, and finally surrendered. Ben felt some satisfaction at having returned Tahiri to the Light Side of the Force, and then began to work with his father to help restore the Jedi Order. They reunited with each other over the next three years, and Ben eventually became a Jedi Knight in his own right. He experienced a time of relative peace that was shattered when Luke was arrested by the Galactic Alliance Security force and charged with failing to prevent the conflict that arose from Jacen Solo's rise to power. Luke accepted the Galactic Alliance's offer, agreeing to step down as Grand Master for ten years and keeping out of the business of the Jedi Order until he was allowed to return. Ben asked to accompany his father when Luke set out to retrace some of Jacen's steps, stating that he needed to know about Jacen's past as much as Luke did, and Luke agreed to allow him to come along.

When Luke left Coruscant behind to start his sentence, he and Ben set out for the planet Dorin, where they hoped to speak to the Baran Do Sages. While Luke met with Mistress Tila Mong, Ben spent time with Tistura Paan and Charsae Saal. When Saal announced that he had accepted his death, Ben and his father were invited to the farewell ceremony, and Luke was surprised to discovered that Saal had not actually died. Instead, the Skywalkers tracked the Kel Dor to the Caverns of the Hidden One, deep beneath Dorin's surface, and were only mildly welcomed by the assembled beings there. Koro Ziil, the current Hidden One, refused to listen to their requests to return to the surface, but he did allow the Skywalkers to begin integrating themselves into the community. On one walk through the caverns, Ben discovered the self-destruct system that Koro Ziil had installed in the caverns, as a safeguard against outside attack. Ben later revealed that he knew about the self-destruct system when the Hidden One's violent attack on Luke proved unsuccessful, and Koro Ziil refused to allow them to leave. Ben triggered the system, forcing Koro Ziil to accept the death of his people or reveal that there was an escape route.

After leaving Dorin, the Skywalkers traveled to the Kathol Rift, where Luke hoped to learn more about Jacen's training among the Aing-Tii monks. Although the Aing-Tii were willing to teach them, Luke refused to allow Ben to participate in the training. When Ben confronted his father about this, Luke explained that he had assumed Ben would use the strange Force techniques to travel back in time and try to make things right. Ben scoffed at the idea, although inwardly he knew that his father was not far from the truth. In order to avoid making this revelation, Ben stormed off to be alone. Luke eventually allowed Ben to learn the flow-walking technique, but Ben refused to actually attempt it, in order to try and patch up his relationship with his father. Luke eventually realized that Ben was not going to do anything rash or stupid, and allowed Ben to complete his training and use the technique on his own. On his first attempt, Ben was surprised to fnd himself returning to the time when Jacen Solo was staying among the Aing-Tii and learning from Tadar'Ro. The realization that he could do nothing to affect Jacen's eventual path toward becoming Darth Caedus tore at Ben's heart, and he came to the devastating conclusion that he could never have saved Jacen. The experience was enough to make Ben understand that is was best to simply live in the present, and he decided that he would not try to flow-walk again in the future.

Tadar'Ro had given Luke the knowledge that Jacen had left the Aing-Tii and headed to the Maw cluster of black holes, where he hoped to find the beings known as the Mind Drinkers. Luke set off for the Maw, and Ben began to remember some of his time there. He still had a deep-seated fear of a dark, tentacle-like presence he had felt while at Shelter base, and he resolved to face it once they arrived at the Maw. Once within the Maw, Luke and Ben discovered Sinkhole Station and the Mind Walkers who lived inside it, but the existence of the Mind Walkers seemed at once spiritual and destructive. Luke decided to attempt mind walking, in order to fully experience what Jacen had, while Ben remained behind to help the Mind Walkers and ensure his father's safety. Rhondi and Rolund Tremaine were two of the Mind Walkers that Ben helped during this time, feeding them and giving them fluids to restore their deteriorating bodies. However, the Tremaines took turns ocupying Ben's attention, while the other removed the feeding and watering tubes that Ben was using to keep Luke nourished. When Ben discovered their duplicity, he demanded answers about what they were doing. When they stalled, Ben experienced feelings of anger and rage at the Tremaines and the other Mind Walkers, and he feared that he was coming under the same Force psychosis that others had experienced. Rather than let the psychosis overtake him, Ben forced the Tremaines to leave him alone with his father.

When the physical bodies of Seek Ryontarr and Feryl both expired while they were mind walking with Luke, Ben feared that his father might also die. Taking matters into his own hands, he locked Rolund Tremaine in a sleeping cabin, then forced Rhondi Tremaine to accompany him on his own mind walking mission. They found Luke's Force presence, along with those of Ryontarr and Feryl, near the Lake of Apparitions. Wading into the Lake, Ben and Luke encountered specters of Anakin Solo and, wrenchingly, Mara Jade Skywalker. It was Mara who implored Ben to focus on living his life to the fullest, and not worry about what kind of legacy he left behind. Ben took this to heart, but refused to allow Luke to leave the Lake and move into the Mists of Forgetfulness. When Luke refused to leave, Ben demanded to go along, so that his father would be able to return to the real world. However, as they walked and walked, and never seemed to get any closer to the Mists, Ben tried to turn them around and head back to the Jade Shadow.

They were then confronted by the apparition of Jacen Solo, who asked for no forgiveness from them. Instead, Jacen's specter asked them to tell Jaina Solo that he had forgiven her, and Ben lashed out at Jacen, demanding to know why Jacen had put his own sister through the torture she had endured. Luke ordered Ben to calm down, then tried to ask Jacen about what he had seen near the Throne of Balance. Luke told Jacen about his own vision of Allana, Jacen's daughter, assuming a peaceful rulership of the galaxy, and Jacen explained that such a vision meant that his own vision of the future had not come to pass. Jacen then began to sink back into the Lake of Apparitions, but he implored Ben to be decisive in his own life, to choose and act, rather than let events pass him by. With Jacen's departure, Luke decided that it was time to return to the Jade Shadow. Before they could make their departure, however, the Skywalkers were beseiged by a group of strange Sith warriors. Both men fought to the death with their opponents, although Luke managed to capture one young woman who tried to kill him. Ben urged his father to get rid of the woman, but Luke wanted her alive. It was then that Ben sensed the presence of the Sith meditation sphere known as Ship, giving the Skywalkers the clue to realize that their attackers were actually Sith.
