Wookiee
Category: Alien RacesThis race of tall, fur-covered bipeds was native to the planet Kashyyyk. Believed to be descended from tree-climbing mammalians, the Wookiees lived in tree-cities located above Kashyyyk's carnivorous flora and fauna.
Standing more than two meters talls, Wookiees were formidable beings who had fur ranging in color from black to brown to white. They had retractable claws that they used for climbing in the trees. The females had six breasts that were used to feed their live-born litters, which were born after about a standard year's gestation. The baby Wookiees were nearly four feet in length at birth, and spent much of their early lives in the nursery rings of the wroshyr trees, where they learned the basic skills of interaction and survival. At the age of twenty or so, a Wookiee returned to live with their parents, once their education was considered complete. Shortly afterward, most Wookiees were required to complete a trial of adulthood, which usually required obtaining the fibers from the bulb of a syren plant. Higher education was purely voluntary, although many Wookiees chose to learn new skills to help their families earn additional income.
As a people, Wookiees were known for their loyalty and honor, as well for their fierce style of fighting. The primary social unit of Wookiee civilization was the family, which was often extended to include members of other families and even non-Woiokiees. This so-called honor family became the center of a Wookiee's existence, and it was not uncommon for individuals to fly into a rage if they felt their honor family was being threatened. As furhter evidence of their loyalty, Wookiees entered into life-debts to any being who stepped in to save their life or the life of a member of their honor family. This life-debt was binding until the death of the Wookiee, and was often passed down from generation to generation.
The Wookiee race was one of the strongest supporters of the Old Republic, a position that helped them fight back against their predatory neighbors, the Trandoshans. Although the Republic officially forbade the Trandoshans from hunting Wookiees, after the Clone Wars the Empire officially designated Wookiees as slave, and actually employed Trandoshans to acquire new specimens. At the height of the New Order, Wookiees were forced to work in labor camps throughout the galaxy, and it was believed that a large contigent of Wookiees was forced to work on the construction of the first Death Star. Because of this slavery, most Wookiees came to hate the presence of humans, even after Kashyyyk was liberated by the military forces of the Alliance. Access to Kashyyyk was severely limited in the wake of the Battle of Endor, allowing the Wookiees to regain their culture and their pride.
The Wookiees supported the New Republic, and later supported the Galactic Alliance, but chose to remain neutral in the wake of the Yuuzhan Vong War, in an effort to keep the spacelanes near Kashyyyk open to all. When Jacen Solo assumed control of the Galactic Alliance, some forty years after the Battle of Yavin, the Wookiees broke away from the Galactic Alliance and refused to support his leadership. When the Wookiees harbored Han and Leia Organa Solo, as well as the members of the new Jedi Order, Jacen Solo chose to make the Wookiees an example. He launched a war fleet to Kashyyyk and openly attacked the Wookiees, burning many cities and a large part of the planet's surface, hoping to show the rest of the galaxy what would happen it it opposed his rule. With the help of fleets from The Confederation, the Wookiees were able to drive off Solo's forces, and the Wookiees later joined the Jedi Coalition that was formed in the wake of the Second Battle of Fondor. Note that The Wookiee Storybook infers that Wookiees were not native to Kashyyyk, but came to the planet a long time ago.
