Arcona
Category: Alien RacesThe Arcona were a race of scaleless, bipedal serpents with an anvil-shaped head and marble-like eyes. Between their eyes was a small bulbous knob that was used as a heat sensor and supplement to their eyesight. While they lacked noses, Arcona could "taste" scents because of the olfactory nodes located in their tongues. Like other reptiles, Arcona constantly flicked their tongues in and out, tasting the air for smells. Their skin resembled fibrous wood, and ranged in color from dark mahogany through gray to ebony.
The Arcona were native to the planet Cona, where they evolved to breathe the planet's ammonia-laden atmosphere. Thus, individual Arcona who travelled off-world required ammonia supplements in order to survive. When irritated, the eyes of an Arcona exuded a milky, tear-like fluid that served to flush out any particulate matter. Socially, Arcona arranged themselves into hive-like groups called Grand Nests. They were farmers by nature, tilling Cona's desert-like surface to cultivate plants that stored water in their root systems. Most of these farms were located on the fringes of the cities that sprang up around the headquarters of the various mining operations on the planet.
The absence of salt in their environment became a source of trouble for the Arcona, as its presence in foods caused a hallucinatory reaction. Thus, many Arcona who travelled the galaxy became addicted to the substance on occasion. Such salt-addicted Arcona were noticeable by their glowing yellow eyes, a result of a chemical interaction between the salt and their optic nerves. The result of ingesting salt was a hallucinatory vision that played across the Arcona's eyes. However, increased levels of salt also broke down the pancreas' ability to convert ammonia into a water-conserving enzyme, and was thus deadly to the Arcona. The strong family bonds of Arcona society stemmed from the males of the species, who spend months or years researching prospective mates before uniting with a female for life.
