LOM-series Protocol Droid

This series of protocol droids was produced by Industrial Automaton, in an effort to break into the huge protocol market held by Cybot Galactica and the 3PO series. Industrial Automaton believed that finding an initial niche would be important, but worked to avoid a failure similar to that of the PD-series. Instead, the LOM-series protocol droid was targetted for sale among the various insectile races of the galaxy, without specific physical cues that would limit or offend a specific race. Internally, however, many systems were designed for use across the wider range of humanoid races. Because Industrial Automaton used an AA-1 verbobrain and a TranLang III communications module in the manufacture of the LOM series, Cybot Galactica sued IA for copyright infringement and a variety of other crimes. Further production of the LOM series was put on hold until the lawsuits could be resolved, but any legal resolution was later deemed unnecessary when the droid designated as 4-LOM abandoned its post aboard the Kuari Princess and became a notorious bounty hunter. Cybot Galactica quickly pointed out the "poor quality" of the LOM-series droids, but the public outcry resulted in a huge drop in LOM sales. Industrial Automaton halted production of the LOM-series droid shortly afterward.
